The Organizational Development (OD) SIG presents: The Stress Effect: Why Smart Leaders Make Dumb Decisions - And What to Do About It
Why do good leaders with proven track records sometimes suddenly begin making really bad decisionsundefinedor no decisions? While there are numerous well-known public examples of this in large organizations, e.g., Enron, WorldCom, etc., it also happens every day at all leadership levels - not just at the top. Stress impacts a leader’s ability to make timely and effective decisions. As stress increases, access to two critical decision-making functions diminishes. Stress and its impact on cognitive and emotional abilities may provide at least a partial explanation for what Dr. Henry Thompson calls Catastrophic Leadership Failure (CLF).
Henry L. Thompson, Ph.D., President & CEO of High Performing Systems, Inc., is a well known consultant, educator, speaker and author. His unique perspective on leadership, teams and organizations integrates a variety of disciplines, including systems thinking, cognitive science, group dynamics, chaos and complexity. He is widely recognized for his ability to translate complex, theoretical concepts into practical, real-world applications that produce measurable results. Dr. Thompson holds a BA in sociology from Methodist University, an MMAS in Continuous Operations from the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College and an MS and Ph.D. in psychology from The University of Georgia.
